Early 20th Century: Wax Lips candy is believed to have originated in the early 20th century. The exact year and creator of the candy are not widely documented. The confectionery manufacturers of that time aimed to create a fun and whimsical candy item that would provide entertainment and laughter.

Edible Wax Material: Wax Lips are typically made from a type of edible wax that is molded into the shape of oversized lips. The wax is firm but pliable, allowing individuals to wear and shape the lips to their own mouths.

Novelty and Entertainment: Wax Lips are known for their novelty appeal. People enjoy wearing them as a playful prop, particularly during parties, costume events, or for photo opportunities. They provide a humorous and exaggerated appearance when placed over the mouth.

Limited Edible Qualities: While Wax Lips are made from edible wax, they are not intended to be fully consumed like traditional candies. Instead, they are primarily meant for wearing and playful enjoyment. Some individuals may choose to bite or chew on them gently, but they are not typically meant to be eaten entirely.

Continued Popularity: Wax Lips have maintained their popularity as a nostalgic novelty candy over the years. They are often associated with retro candies, vintage-themed events, and costume parties. Their whimsical and lighthearted nature continues to bring smiles and amusement to candy enthusiasts of all ages.

While the specific details of the Wax Lips candy's history may vary, they remain a beloved and iconic candy item that adds fun and silliness to various social gatherings and celebrations.

Wax Lips Memories

When I was a child I was put in charge of taking some of the younger kids around the block on Halloween. We had just received wax lips as a "treat" and I had mine one. I was leaning on the front door of a neighborhood home waiting for the door to open. I had the wax lips on and I had been clowning around with the younger kids, making them laugh because the wax lips.

We were having a great time until the front door opened and I fell backwards into the arms of the homeowner. I tried to explain to her what had happened but she could not understand me because I was still wearing my wax lips. In my mind I can still taste those wax lips! ~ Anna Lee from Tennessee

Oh, how I remember those red wax lips. I must have been around 7,8, or 9 years old. This would have been in the early 1960's. My friends Alana, Aimee and Janet and I would hurry to the 5 and 10 and head for the candy area. We lived in Dyersville, IA. If I remember correctly, the lips were maybe .02 or .03 cents. We would walk out of the store with our little brown bags with candy in it. I would put the lips on and try to talk. We would laugh and start for home. It wouldn't be long and I would be chewing the wax until it would fall into little pieces and I would spit them out. I can still recall the sweet smell and sugary flavor of those lips. ~Linda from Minnesota
